Liquid, alkaline heavy-duty immersion cleaner designed to remove phosphate and lubricant soils from steel work. One of our strongest and most reliable cleaners it digests both oils and soils to prevent redeposition on the steel surface. Freiclean 56 is used in rod and wire coating lines, barrel lines, and tube mills.

FREICLEAN 56 is a liquid, alkaline heavy-duty immersion cleaner for steel. FREICLEAN 56 is
designed to remove phosphate and lubricant soils from steel work.

FREICLEAN 56 may be used at concentrations of 5-15% by volume with operating temperatures
of 150-200°F. The normal processing time is 3-10 minutes for immersion. For optimum removal of heavy phosphate coatings, a concentration of 10% by volume at 190°F with immersion time of 5 minutes or more is recommended.

Free Alkali:
The concentration of the FREICLEAN 56 solution may be determined by the Free Alkali titration as follows:

Pipette a 2 ml sample of the FREICLEAN 56 solution into a suitable beaker or Erlenmeyer flask and add 4 drops of Indication Solution 3(Phenolphthalein). Titrate the pink solution with Testing Solution 20 (0.1 N H2SO4) until the pink color is just removed from the solution. Record the number of milliliters of Testing Solution 20 used as the Free Alkali Points.

Concentration (% v/v) = (Free Alkali Points) x 0.683 = (mls Testing Solution 20) x 0.683

A FREICLEAN 56 solution prepared at 10% by volume will have a titration reading of
approximately 14.7 points Testing Solution 20. Addition of 6.8 gals (76 lbs.) of FREICLEAN 56 per 1000 gals will raise the titration by 1 point.

Total Alkali:
The ratio of Total Alkali to Free Alkali can give an indication of when the cleaning solution should be discarded. The Total Alkali is determined as follows:

Pipette a 2 mL sample of the FREICLEAN 56 solution into a suitable beaker or Erlenmeyer
flask and add 2-3 drops of Indicating Solution 8 (Methyl Orange-Xylene Cyanol Complex)
and titrate the sample with Testing Solution 20 (0.1 N H2SO4) until the green color turns a
purple.

A fresh solution of FREICLEAN 56 will have the same Total Alkali and Free Alkali titration reading and the ratio of Total Alkali to Free Alkali is 1.0. The general rule of thumb is to discard the bath when theTotal Alkali to Free Alkali reading is 2.0.

With experience, the ratio at which the cleaner is discarded may be higher or lower depending on the operation and the type of soils encountered.
