FREIBONE “ACID CLEANER” P20 is a Liquid Mineral Acid Cleaner, with a special blend of surfactants designed to remove soap lube, Drawing oil, zinc phosphate and oxidation stains from the aluminum surface with very little attack on the aluminum. The cleaning action softens hard-to-remove soils and the acid helps lift the soil from the surface. Mechanical impingement will also aid in removal of the soil by hydraulic action. Tumbling the parts in a barrel, with enough headspace is a good way to prevent parts nesting, allowing all surfaces contact time with the cleaner. Parts can also be rack mounted or placed in a wire basket in a single layer to minimize “surface to surface” contact area. The cleaner will not emulsify the soils, so the surface of the tank should be skimmed clean to avoid re-deposition. If a spray is used the sump should be skimmed and filtered clean to avoid clogging the spray nozzles.
The resulting surface will be active (deoxidized) and clean. When the cleaner is cooled and stagnant the solidified soap and wax can be scraped from the sides and lifted off the surface. Some of the aluminum salts can be removed by a 25 micron acid resistant filter to improve bath life and TA/FA ratio.

Recommended tank materials can be the same as sulfuric acid pickle. Rubber Koroseal lined or plastic lined steel tank or a 316 stainless steel can also be used. The stainless steel may get a light coating of copper from the etched aluminum through galvanic action. Soak or spray with FREICLEAN P20 then follow that with two counter flowing rinses and/or spray rinse should follow.

The usual build-up concentration is 15-25% by volume added into 75-85% by volume water.

Cleaning times vary from 1 to 5 minutes depending on soil and the time the part takes to acquire the operating temperature (range of 150-175oF). Cleaning times should be kept to a minimum to maximize bath life and avoid smutting. Temperature of operation must be above 150°F and the parts must also absorb enough h eat to be above 150°F during cleaning. The dwell time depends on the mass of the parts and the softening temperature of the soils.

Follow the Cleaning station with clean water counter flowing rinses and/or a good soaking spray. Maintaining some temperature in the parts will facilitate drying. If the rinses become too contaminated with the cleaner the parts will dry with a light powdery white film.

The ratio TA/FA = 1.2 for a new bath a used bath 2.7 or more. Minimum free acid is 6 points
to maintain performance.

A partial bath make-up can restore some of the performance of the bath.

Aluminum salts can be filtered out of a cold bath solution to improve the TA/FA.

An overflow weir and/or a belt skimmer is recommended to maintain good cleaning when removing soap lubes.

Waste treatment: Follow normal procedures to remove aluminum from an acid solution.
Follow local regulations for disposal or reclamation.
