Single chemical zinc phosphate coating process designed for use in wire, rod and bar drawing, and in cold heading applications. Formcoat 6 is easy to operate and control but generates more sludge than other Formcoat zinc phosphate chemistries.

FORMCOAT 6 is a single chemical zinc phosphate coating process designed for use in wire, rod and bar drawing and in cold heading applications.

Fill the tank to the three-quarter level with water. For every 1,000 gallons of working solution required add 560 lbs. (45 gallons) of FORMCOAT 6. Add remainder of water and heat to the operational temperature range, 155 – 165°F.

The cleaned parts are now immersed in the FORMCOAT 6 solution for about 5 minutes to produce a uniform zinc phosphate coating. This treatment is normally followed by a cold water rinse.

Take a 10 ml. sample and add 5 drops of Indicating Solution 3 (phenolphthalein). Titrate with Testing Solution 11 (0.1N NaOH) to the development of a permanent pink color. A solution made up at the suggested concentration would require 30 mls. of Testing Solution 11 and is known as a 30-point bath.

Addition of 20 lbs. (13 pints) of FORMCOAT 6 per 1,000 gallons will increase the concentration by 1 point.

FORMCOAT 6 has a specific gravity of 1.452 and weighs 12.1 lbs. per gallon (U.S.).
